With Jaqine at its center, a small community comprises Jaqine’s family and her closest friends. Jaqine: High School is Complicated by Jacquelyn Barnes introduces us to the central character’s best friends, Tasha and Candice. Of course, her boyfriend Jason provides adequate distraction, especially when she sees him talking to another girl. This is enough to evoke the themes of jealousy and betrayal, a common feature of teenage angst. We see Jaqine approach prom night, and the arrival of a newborn into the family adds to or disrupts the cozy sisterhood she shares with her younger sibling.
